SITTING casually on a vintage sports car, Michael Gray is geared up to continue a proud family tradition. At the weekend, he will follow in the footsteps of his father, uncle, grandfather and even his grandmother and drive the 1972 MG Midget in a prestigious classic car race.
Schoolboy Michael, 16, of South Queensferry, West Lothian, will sit behind the wheel of the vintage sports car on Sunday in his first competitive race. When he fires up the engine before the Scottish Classic sports and Saloon Championship event at the Knockhill Racing Circuit, near Dunfermline, Fife, on Sunday, it will be the first time the Midget has been raced in 18 years.
Last night, Michael said: 'It's going to be an honour to race the Midget in my first ever race. I can't wait. It's been a winning car for every member of my family.' His father Stuart, 47, uncle Angus, 50, grandfather Tom, 76, and grandmother, Oonagh, 75, have all picked up trophies in the mustard Midget.
Grandfather Tom, who started the Grays' love affair with MGs in the 1950s, said: 'The Midget has great importance to this family.'
Michael's father Stuart, events director at Knockhill, said: 'It was the first car I learned to drive in, as did my brother Angus - and we went on to compete in races across Scotland. But it's been sitting idle for the past 18 years.'Maybe it'll be a lucky mascot for Michael because we've all raced in it and won our respective races.'
